Godzilla Minus Zero Brings Back Godzilla With a New Threat

Godzilla is back, but this time Japan may be facing more than one monster. Toho has released the first full trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to its Oscar-winning 2023 film Godzilla Minus One.

The new film returns to post-war Japan in 1949, two years after the events of the previous story, as the country attempts to rebuild before another disaster threatens its fragile recovery.

Directed, written and overseen on visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere in Japan on November 3 before its North American theatrical release on November 6, 2026. The film will also have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26.

The Trailer Teases Another Monster

Godzilla is clearly at the centre of the new trailer, but the big surprise may be the suggestion that he will not be the only kaiju involved.

A distinctive roar and flashes of what appears to be yellow lightning have led several outlets to identify the possible presence of King Ghidorah, one of Godzilla’s most famous enemies. Ars Technica described the footage as teasing the three-headed monster, while Nerdist also pointed to clues suggesting Ghidorah could be involved.

Toho has not officially confirmed King Ghidorah’s appearance, so the trailer should be treated as a tease rather than confirmation. That uncertainty could be deliberate. Godzilla Minus One succeeded partly because it treated Godzilla less like a conventional superhero villain and more like a terrifying force that ordinary people had to survive. Introducing another major monster could push the sequel towards a more traditional kaiju spectacle.

Godzilla Returns to a Recovering Japan

Godzilla Minus Zero continues the story of Kōichi Shikishima, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Noriko Shikishima, played by Minami Hamabe. Several other characters from Godzilla Minus One are also returning, including Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda and Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota.
