For years, Mac users have relied on Spotlight on Apple computers to instantly find files, apps, and even web results without opening a browser or switching windows. A quick keyboard shortcut, a few keystrokes, and the answer is right there. It’s one of those small features that quietly shapes how people use their computers every day.
Now, Windows users are getting a very similar experience, as Google has officially taken its experimental desktop search app out of beta and turned it into a full-fledged app for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
It first appeared in a rough beta form in late 2025 as part of Google’s Labs experiments, where early testers could try a floating search bar that worked across their PC. At the time, it felt unfinished and clunky, even requiring users to uninstall older builds before installing updates. With this official release, though, Google has polished the experience and made it publicly available to Windows users globally in English.
At its core, the app turns the simple shortcut Alt + Space into an AI-powered search tool. Pressing the keys brings up a compact search box that floats above whatever you’re doing. From there, you can search the web with AI-powered results, browse your local files and installed apps, and even pull in documents from Google Drive. without needing to open a browser tab or minimize what you’re working on.
The app also supports screen sharing for context, allowing you to ask questions about a document or webpage currently open. With built-in Google Lens, you can highlight anything on your screen to search or translate it instantly.
Setting up the Google desktop app
Getting started is straightforward. The app can be downloaded directly from Google’s website. Once installed, it runs quietly in the background and is triggered with the Alt + Space shortcut at any time.
It works on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices and is currently available only in English. Users must be at least 13 years old, and while you can use the app without signing in, logging into a Google account unlocks deeper integration with Drive and personalized results.
