Gremlins 3 Delayed Nearly a Year as Warner Bros. Moves Sequel to 2028

Gremlins 3 has been delayed to 2028, giving Gizmo and the mischievous Mogwai more time before their return to cinemas.

Gizmo is returning to the big screen, although Gremlins 3 will take a little longer to get there. Warner Bros. has pushed the long-awaited sequel from November 19, 2027, to October 6, 2028, moving its release date by almost a year.

Warner Bros. announced the new release date on September 23 with a short teaser that offers the first glimpse of Gizmo's return, showing the character tucked inside a backpack.

The sequel is heading exclusively to cinemas, with Chris Columbus returning as director and producer and Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. Warner Bros. has yet to reveal the plot or announce the full cast, keeping much of Gremlins 3 under wraps.

Why Has Gremlins 3 Been Delayed?

Warner Bros. has not announced a specific reason for the change. That means there is no confirmed production problem, scheduling conflict, or creative dispute to report.

What we do know is that the project has been developing for years. Warner Bros. officially announced it in November 2025, with Columbus returning to the franchise and Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein involved in the screenplay. Hannah Marks is now writing the current draft.

The extra year, therefore, gives the filmmakers more time to complete a project that has been waiting more than three decades for a theatrical follow-up.

Could The Delay Benefit Gremlins 3?

Columbus has previously said he wanted the new film to use tangible puppets rather than rely heavily on CGI. “I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI,” he told Collider in 2020. He also explained that CGI could still be used in limited ways to make practical effects easier.

That approach is significant because the original Gremlins depended heavily on physical creature effects.

Taking extra time to design, build, and operate those characters could help the new film preserve the tactile quality that made Gizmo and the Gremlins feel like creatures actually occupying the same world as the human characters. The delay does not prove that this is why the film moved. It does, however, give the production more room to get that balance right.
