Grok AI gets memory feature, takes shot at ChatGPT and Gemini
Grok will now be able to “remember” information from past conversations and use that context in future chats.
Grok has spent much of the past year playing catch-up in the AI chatbot race. But xAI, the Elon Musk-owned AI company, is steadily closing the gap with big names like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, thanks to a steady rollout of new features that are making Grok more competitive.
First came its own standalone apps and website, and more recently, it launched Grok Studio, a canvas-style interface similar to what users already had with Claude and ChatGPT. Now, Grok is rolling out an update that many might find very helpful: memory.
With this latest update, Grok will be able to “remember” information from past conversations and use that context in future chats. So if you’ve been asking for recommendations or advice, it’ll start tailoring its responses more personally, assuming you’ve interacted with it enough for it to pick up on your preferences.

For Grok’s 17.6 million monthly active users, that’s a big step toward frictionless, natural conversations. No more repeating the same prompts every session. Instead, you get a chatbot that feels more like a personal assistant delivering personalised responses, much like what ChatGPT already offers with its memory feature, or Google’s Gemini, which also uses persistent memory to tailor replies.
That said, memory features like this always come with a side of scepticism. We all know these chatbots have access to a surprising amount of our data. The question now is how much they’re actually remembering and how transparent that process is. To its credit, Grok says it’s giving users control. You can view what the bot remembers, delete individual memories, or turn off the feature entirely in settings.
The memory feature is currently in beta on Grok.com and the Grok mobile apps (iOS and Android), though it’s not yet available in the EU or the U.K.
This update comes on the heels of Grok’s explosive growth. Between February and March 2025, the platform’s web traffic jumped 269%—from 51.5 million visits to nearly 190 million, according to DemandSage. And while its active user base remains smaller than rivals like Gemini (275 million monthly visits) and Claude (129 million), Grok is quickly climbing the ranks.
Still, the top spot isn’t up for grabs—yet. ChatGPT remains the giant in the space, pulling in over 5 billion monthly visits as of March 2025.
But Grok is picking up speed, and with updates like memory and a spike in web traffic, it's not just chasing the pack anymore. It's starting to look like a real contender.
