After years of trailers, screenshots, leaks, and speculation, we finally have a proper look at Grand Theft Auto 6.
Rockstar Games has released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a roughly 26-minute gameplay preview that gives us the clearest picture yet of its next open-world game. One detail stands out immediately: consoles are currently running the game at 30 frames per second, according to Rockstar North lead developer and co-director Rob Nelson.
The footage premiered on Netflix before arriving on Rockstar's official channels and YouTube.
Instead of another short trailer, Rockstar spends the preview showing Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos going about their lives in Leonida. We see robberies, shootouts, car chases, nightlife, beaches, crowded streets, and plenty of the chaos that comes with being a criminal in GTA's version of Florida.
The timing is notable. The extended preview follows the circulation of unauthorised GTA 6 footage online, allowing Rockstar to put a much more substantial look at the game in front of players itself.
After watching the full preview, one thing stands out above everything else: Rockstar is building GTA 6 around Jason and Lucia, and their relationship is tied closely to how the game plays.

Jason and Lucia Drive the Story
Rockstar has already told us that Jason and Lucia are partners whose plans for an easy score go wrong, pulling them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida.
The extended preview gives us a much better idea of what that partnership looks like.
The two are frequently together, helping each other through dangerous situations and working as a team during criminal operations. In one sequence, Jason lowers Lucia through a window as they escape a drug bust. In another, the pair coordinated during a shootout.
That relationship seems to be more than just the basis for the story.
It is also shaping the gameplay.
Jason and Lucia come from very different backgrounds. Jason grew up around criminals, later served in the Army, and eventually started working with drug runners in the Keys.
Lucia, meanwhile, grew up learning to fight, spent time in Leonida Penitentiary, and left prison determined to build a better life.
Rockstar's official character information gives us more detail about their histories and the world they come from. Despite those differences, both are looking for a way out of their current lives. That makes their partnership one of the most important parts of GTA 6.
Character Switching Works Differently This Time
GTA 5 made character switching one of its defining features, letting players jump between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. GTA 6 brings the mechanic back, but Jason and Lucia give Rockstar a different way to use it.
Instead of switching between three protagonists living largely separate lives, players can switch between two characters who are often involved in the same situation.
Jason might be driving while Lucia handles something outside the car. One can enter a building while the other waits nearby. During an escape, control can move between them as the situation changes.
The preview shows several examples of this. That could make switching feel less like moving between separate storylines and more like controlling different sides of the same mission. And it fits with what Rockstar seems to be doing with the rest of the game: making the world and its characters feel more connected.
