House of the Dragon may have finished its third season, but viewers were still spending plenty of time in Westeros.

Nielsen data shows that HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel recorded 940 million minutes of viewing on HBO Max during the week of August 3-9, placing it second among all streaming programmes in the US.

But there's an important detail behind that number. The 940 million minutes were recorded during the week that ended on the same day as the August 9 Season 3 finale, meaning the figure is better understood as a measure of interest around the finale rather than a result that came entirely after it.

The finale itself later recorded 21 million viewers globally across HBO and HBO Max in its first three days.

Disney $50 Million Settlement: How to Claim Your Share
YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream customers have until September 8 to claim part of Disney’s $50 million settlement. Here’s who qualifies and how to claim.

House of the Dragon Remained One of Streaming’s Biggest Shows

Nielsen ranked House of the Dragon second overall behind The Big Bang Theory, which collected 1.061 billion minutes across 281 episodes. The 940 million minutes for House of the Dragon came from 26 episodes across its three seasons.

Nielsen’s minutes are not simply a count of people who watched the latest episode. They measure the total time viewers spent watching available episodes during the week. In House of the Dragon’s case, the figure therefore reflects a mixture of viewers catching up on earlier seasons, rewatching episodes and following the third season as it approached its conclusion.

The show had already demonstrated strong streaming demand earlier in the season. Nielsen recorded 969 million minutes during the week of July 6-12, when it ranked second overall, showing that its audience was not dependent on the finale alone.

The Finale Attracted 21 Million Viewers

House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with 21 million viewers globally during its first three days of availability across HBO and HBO Max, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s internal viewing figures combined with Nielsen measurement. More than 11 million of those viewers were in the US.
