How to Get Coins in Pokémon Go

If you've played Pokémon Go enough times, chances are you've found yourself in need of PokéCoins on multiple occasions. While they're essential for day-to-day transactions in the game, there aren't many ways to farm this currency. Learning all the possible methods to obtain coins is the best way to ensure you have a stable amount of them.

What are Pokémon Go Coins

PokéCoins are the main currency in Pokémon Go, and you use them for almost everything in the game. From buying boxes to consumables or increasing your Pokémon's stats, you’re gonna need PokéCoins. And these items don’t come cheap, so you'll be spending a lot of coins on every purchase.

How to Get or Farm PokéCoins

There are several ways to get PokéCoins in Pokémon Go. Some of them require spending real-world money, but there are ways to get them for free or by grinding. Here are the different ways to obtain coins in Pokémon Go.

Put Pokémon in Gyms

The most free-to-play method to farm PokéCoins is to earn them through gyms. Every time you take over a gym, you're allowed to place one Pokémon to secure the place. Each one placed within the gym generates one coin every 10 minutes. However, you can only earn up to 50 PokéCoins this way. This is consistent across any gym, so even if you place three different Pokémon in three different gyms, you'll only receive 50 per day. However, the reset occurs every midnight, allowing you to claim another 50 after the refresh.

Note: You can only claim the PokéCoins once your Pokémon has been defeated. Suppose one Pokémon in a gym is defeated while another Pokémon you have is eliminated the following day. In that case, you'll gain 100 coins since the midnight reset already took effect—only the time of elimination counts and not the time when they're placed inside the gym.

Topping Up PokéCoins

You can opt to buy PokéCoins via the in-game store, using various payment methods to top up the currency. Here’s how to purchase coins in Pokémon Go:

  • Head to the Map View and go to the Main Menu
  • Go to the Shop and tap the PokéCoins package you wish to purchase
  • After selecting which bundle, you'll be given a prompt by Google Play, Galaxy Store, or App Store to confirm your purchase.
  • Once you complete the prompt, you can use your newly acquired PokéCoins.

Several bundles are available for purchase in this manner. They'll have varying prices, so choose one that suits your needs. Here are the prices for all the PokéCoins:

  • 100: $0.99
  • 550: $4.99
  • 1,200: $9.99
  • 2,500: $19.99
  • 5,200: $39.99
  • 14,500: $99.99

However, it should be noted that players can get more PokéCoins at discounted prices if they buy them via the Pokémon Go Web Store:

  • 600 PokéCoins + 50 Web Store Bonus Coins: $4.99
  • 1,300 PokéCoins + 100 Web Store Bonus Coins: $9.99
  • 2,700 PokéCoins + 200 Web Store Bonus Coins: $19.99
  • 5,600 PokéCoins + 400 Web Store Bonus Coins: $39.99
  • 15,500 PokéCoins + 1000 Web Store Bonus Coins: $99.99

Complete Milestones

Some milestones can give you PokéCoin rewards for your Pokémon Go accounts, so it's a great idea to finish them when you can. The easiest to complete are those that require you to invite more friends to play the game. Once you've exhausted all your milestone progression, you can opt to focus on taking over gyms.

Site Rewards

Several websites offer rewards in the form of PokéCoins for completing specific tasks or by simply playing the game. These websites include ZoomBucks, Gamehag, and Swagbucks, but the tasks involved can be tedious. In addition, some of them have very short time limits, so you'll have to do them quickly or else you won't receive any rewards.

Where to Spend Your PokéCoins

There are many items available in the in-game Shop that you can buy, but since you have minimal coins, you’ll need to save up and prioritize which ones to purchase. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, consider focusing on the following:

  • Pokémon Storage
  • Item Storage
  • Ultra Box
  • Adventure Box
  • Lucky Eggs

These are some of the most essential items to buy. However, boxes are the most worthwhile investment once you've reached your storage limit. Lucky Eggs are also great, but only up until a certain point. Be sure to spend your PokéCoins wisely after you've earned them.
