It’s in some ways rare to see an app that lets you store your documents and also scan them when you need to. Most apps either do one or the other—you download one for storage, another for scanning, and maybe a third just to convert things to PDF.

For a long time, I used Google Drive like most people do—as a place to store PDFs, receipts, class notes, and screenshots. I had no idea it could scan documents until I stumbled on the feature during one of those rushed moments. Out of habit, I opened Google Drive to upload a photo version, and that’s when I noticed the “Scan” option.

Tried it and it worked just as fine as any third party app would and saved straight to the cloud.

If you’ve never used it, here’s how to do it in a few simple steps:

Steps to scan text on your mobile using Google Drive

Step 1. Open the Google Drive app on your smartphone

Step 2. Tap on the plus icon to view the selection

Step 3. Select Scan

Step 4. Place your phone near the text you want to scan. You will see a blue line framing the text area

Step 5. Tap the shutter icon to scan or you could leave it to scan automatically when it detects the document

Step 6. After scanning, you can crop, adjust, or retake the image.

Step 7. Once you are done adjusting to your preference, tap "Done," then "Upload" to save it directly to your Google Drive

Conclusion

Scanning text or documents doesn’t have to be stressful and annoying. I used to think I needed a special app every time I had to send a scanned copy of something. But sometimes, the easiest solution is the one you’ve had all along.

And finding out I could scan directly with Google Drive instead of third-party apps like CamScanner felt better. With just a tap, you can scan and save it where you already keep everything else.
