When you're trying to manage your time, there's a lot to think about. From setting goals to building routines, it can feel like a constant juggling act. One thing that often slips under the radar, though, is screen time. Spending too much time on your phone can quietly drain your focus, cut into your productivity, and even mess with your sleep.

If you're like me, you’ve probably found yourself scrolling longer than you want to with no real purpose. That’s where your One UI phone can lend a hand. I know it sounds a bit ironic to use your phone to help you use it less. But hear me out.

Samsung Galaxy phones have a feature called Modes and Routines, as part of their One UI system. It lets you automate parts of your day by changing settings based on time, location, or how you use certain apps. You can set it up to mute notifications during work, open focus apps in the morning, or cut out distractions when you’re winding down.

I’ve been using it myself, and honestly, it’s helped me find a better rhythm. I still want to stay connected and get things done without being glued to my screen. Setting quiet time to read, focus hours for work, or even reminders to take breaks, it’s all made easier with a few tweaks in Modes and Routines. And if you’re curious, I’ll show you exactly how to set it up.

How to Reduce Screen Time on Your Samsung Phone (Without Missing Out)
Take control of your screen time with small and honest steps.

Steps to Set Up Routines on Your Samsung Phone

Step 1. Open Settings on your Samsung phone.

Step 2. Select Modes and Routines. You’ll see “Modes” and “Routines” as separate sections. Tap on "Routines" to start creating automation.

Step 3. Tap + to create a new routine.

Step 4. Set the Trigger (If Condition). You can choose a trigger like "Time," "Place," or "Context."

For example, set a specific time for reading at 3 PM every day. Once set, tap "Done."

Step 5. Now, choose the Actions (Then Condition) to notify you to focus on the task you set up a trigger for. Here we picked "Notification" as our "Then condition"

Next, set up a custom notification to read a book.

  • Enter the title of the book you want to read and a notification text of what page you want to cover. You can toggle on "Read this notification aloud" and tap "Done."

Step 6. Then tap "Save" to activate it.

You can set up multiple routines for different times of day or goals, like Sleep Mode, Workout Time, or even Social Media Breaks.

Conclusion

While it may seem hard to follow this routine, you don’t have to let it overwhelm you. You can start small, taking it a step at a time—like covering one page today and tomorrow, increasing it to two. This helps to build momentum and gradually eases you into the habit.

Over time, the consistency will pay off, and what once felt like a daunting task will become second nature. Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small. Keep at it, and you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.
