Indonesia Plans to Raise Visa on Arrival Fees, But There’s a Catch

Indonesia could soon raise its Visa on Arrival (VOA) fees, with travelers potentially paying different amounts depending on whether they apply online before departure or obtain the visa after arriving in the country. 

Hendarsam Marantoko, Indonesia’s Director General of Immigration, presented the proposal during a briefing at the Directorate General of Immigration headquarters in Jakarta on August 12, 2026. 

According to him, the proposal is meant to "deal with the fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate," he said in the briefing, adding that the existing fee is considered too low in terms of state revenue.

Proposed fee increase on Visa on Arrival 

Under the new proposal, travellers would now pay a fee of 750,000 rupiah (about $42) for an e-VOA before arrival and 1 million rupiah (about $56) for a VOA issued upon arrival in the country. The new fee is a 50% increase for the e-VOA obtained before departure, while for the VOA issued upon arrival, it is a 100% increase from its current flat rate of 500,000 rupiah (about $28). 

Aside from increasing the country's revenue, the director general also claimed the fee proposal is to encourage travellers to apply for the e-VOA while also reducing congestion at the airport. 

"The point is that if they apply for the VoA from their home country, they pay 750,000 rupiah (about $42). If they apply for it at the arrival location, they pay 1 million rupiah (about $56)," he said during the briefing.
