iOS 27 arrives today, and there's a lot of excitement around Apple's biggest software update in years. One of the headline features is Siri AI, after two years of Apple promising a smarter, more capable version of Siri powered by on-device intelligence and generative AI.
Siri AI is a ChatGPT-like assistant powered by Google Gemini, with a dedicated app and the ability to understand what's on your screen. It requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. This could be Apple's biggest software update in years.
Here's what's new, who gets it, and how to install it.
When and how to download iOS 27
iOS 27 rolls out on Monday, September 14. Based on Apple's usual release schedule, the update is expected to become available around 10 a.m. Pacific Time, or 1 p.m. Eastern.
To install it:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Software Update.
- Download and install iOS 27.
You can also enable Automatic Updates so your iPhone installs the update automatically.
Apple is also releasing iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 on the same day.
Siri AI is the biggest new feature
Once you've installed the update, the first thing you'll notice is Siri AI. It's the headline addition to iOS 27. Apple has completely rebuilt Siri with a dedicated app, on-screen awareness, and the ability to perform actions across apps. It can also draw on personal information stored on your iPhone to provide more contextual responses.
