Every few years, someone declares that America is becoming less attractive to global talent. Then a number comes along and makes that claim a little awkward.

That number, this week, was 200,000.

According to figures shared by the Department of Homeland Security, more than 200,000 H-1B applications went through a $100,000 route that allowed employers bring workers into the country faster.

What makes that even more surprising is that H-1B applications actually fell by nearly 27%. So while fewer people applied overall, thousands of employers still looked at a six-figure fee and thought it was worth paying. In some countries, $100,000 gets you a house. In this case, it got companies a shorter wait for skilled workers.

This week, David digs into the numbers behind the H-1B rush and what they reveal about America's continuing appetite for global talent.
