PayPal Is No Longer Supported by Google Wallet in the U.S.
PayPal’s removal from Google Wallet may force users to adapt to other services.
If you’ve been relying on Google Wallet to quickly pay with your PayPal account, there’s an important change coming and it’s happening fast.
Google has confirmed that, starting June 13, 2025, all linked PayPal accounts will be automatically removed from Google Wallet for users in the U.S. And once the link is gone, you won’t be able to add PayPal back in.
This shift doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. Google stopped allowing new PayPal signups through Wallet back in April. Now, the full phase-out means U.S. users will lose one of the more convenient payment options in their digital wallet. If you have recurring payments or subscriptions tied to your PayPal account in Wallet, you’ll need to switch to another payment method, like credit or debit cards soon to avoid service disruptions.
It’s worth noting that this change only affects linked PayPal accounts, not PayPal-branded debit cards. So, if you’re using a PayPal Mastercard directly in Wallet, you’re in the clear.
What’s odd, though, is that this is a U.S.-only change. Google has said the PayPal integration will remain available in Germany, where PayPal recently launched contactless payments directly in its own app. That raises a few eyebrows: Is PayPal prepping to go head-to-head with Google Wallet in the U.S. and phasing out the partnership ahead of time? If so, they would be following the steps of some of their competitors like Stripe, which encouraged shifting away from third parties to focusing its own payment gateway.
Google hasn’t offered any official explanation, and PayPal hasn’t said anything about a wider rollout of its new feature outside Germany—yet.
Still, while the loss of PayPal integration will frustrate some users, Google Wallet today is a very different product than it was when the PayPal option first launched. It now supports a broad range of banks, credit cards, transit passes, and loyalty programmes, making it easier to build a complete digital wallet experience without needing third-party add-ons.
If you’re in the U.S. and have PayPal tied to your Google Wallet, update your payment methods now. After June 13, you’ll be out of luck and likely scrambling at checkout.
