PBS Cancels One Show and Renews Several Hit Series in 2026

PBS is heading into the 2026-27 television season with a mixed bag for viewers. One programme has already been cancelled, two popular dramas are moving towards their final seasons, while several other shows have secured more episodes.

The latest update, published on August 30, covers titles across PBS and MASTERPIECE, including Miss Scarlet, Grantchester, The Marlow Murder Club, The Forsytes and Unforgotten.

Several of PBS's best-known British dramas are being kept alive, but some are also being deliberately brought to an end. That suggests a network trying to balance long-running audience favourites with the need to refresh its schedule. Here is what is changing and what it means for PBS viewers.

PBS News Weekend is the major cancellation

PBS News Weekend ended its run in January 2026, with its final broadcast airing on January 11. PBS NewsHour confirmed that the programme was cancelled following the loss of federal funding for public media. Anchor John Yang said during the final broadcast that it was the show’s last episode “at least for the foreseeable future”.

PBS replaced the weekend programme with two new shows: Horizons, focused on science, health, technology and the environment, and Compass Points, which examines major international issues with expert guests, both launched in January. The change therefore reflects more than a programming decision. PBS is reshaping its weekend news offering while dealing with a different funding environment.

Miss Scarlet and Grantchester are coming to an end

Two major MASTERPIECE dramas have also reached their final chapters. Miss Scarlet has been renewed for Season 7, but PBS has confirmed that it will be the series finale. The announcement came directly from stars Kate Phillips and Tom Durant-Pritchard, with Phillips telling viewers that the upcoming season would be the show's last.

Grantchester is also ending after Season 11. PBS describes the latest run as the “final season”, bringing the period crime drama's long-running story to a close after more than a decade on screen.

These endings do not mean the shows were cancelled unexpectedly. Both have been given a final season, allowing their stories to reach a planned conclusion rather than simply disappearing between seasons.
