Nintendo may be preparing to take Princess Peach in a more story-driven direction following the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
According to Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, the expanded backstory given to Princess Peach in the new animated film could influence how the character is portrayed in future Super Mario games.
In a recent interview with Nintendo Dream, Miyamoto was asked whether the deeper character development shown for Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie should be considered official canon. His response suggests that Nintendo is open to carrying parts of that storytelling into upcoming titles.
“I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games,” Miyamoto said.
That statement marks a notable shift in how Nintendo has traditionally approached storytelling in the Super Mario universe.
For decades, Nintendo has intentionally kept character lore minimal, focusing instead on gameplay rather than deep narrative continuity. Miyamoto explained that this was a deliberate choice because detailed backstories could limit creative freedom when designing future games.
“Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint,” he said.
This philosophy has shaped the Super Mario series for years, where characters like Princess Peach, Mario, and Bowser have remained iconic but relatively simple in terms of personal history.
But the process of making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie appears to have changed Miyamoto’s perspective.
According to him, expanding Peach’s backstory during the film’s development became an enjoyable creative exercise, one that may now carry over into Nintendo’s game development plans.
That could mean future Super Mario titles may start giving more narrative weight to characters who have historically served simple gameplay roles.
For Princess Peach, especially, this could be a major evolution.
Long portrayed primarily as the kingdom’s ruler or the character Mario must rescue, Peach has gradually taken on more active roles in recent games like Princess Peach: Showtime!. If Nintendo now intends to align future games with the lore established in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, fans may see an even deeper and more consistent version of Peach across the franchise.
This would also signal a broader change in how Nintendo balances storytelling with gameplay. While Miyamoto made it clear that gameplay will remain the priority, his comments suggest that Nintendo now sees value in letting films help define character identities in games.
That could have major implications not just for Peach, but for the future of the entire Super Mario universe.
As Nintendo continues expanding into film, its cinematic storytelling may increasingly influence the world's players' experience in future games, and Princess Peach may be the first major example of that new direction.
