Sony's decision to stop producing new PlayStation game discs from January 2028 has quickly become one of the biggest debates in gaming.

What began as a brief announcement has sparked a much larger conversation about ownership, preservation, and whether players are slowly losing control over the games they buy.

A Change.org petition urging Sony to reverse course has attracted more than 120,000 signatures, acording to Digital Foundry, while creators, collectors, and preservation advocates continue to criticize the move.

The backlash has been amplified by another recent announcement: Sony will also shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita in 2027, reinforcing concerns that the company's future is becoming increasingly dependent on digital storefronts.

PS3 & PS Vita Store Closing: Full Shutdown Dates (2027)
Sony has confirmed the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will begin closing in select markets this August, with a full global shutdown set for July 2027.

Why are gamers protesting Sony's digital-only future?

The petition, titled Don't Kill the Disc, was launched by Jade Pearce, CEO of a Canadian independent games retailer. Its central message reads, "We are not against digital. We are against digital being the only option."
