State of Decay 3 is now targeting a 2027 release, with Undead Labs preparing to expand testing through a closed beta before the end of 2026.

The update surfaced during the busy Gamescom 2026 schedule, where the upcoming survival game quietly confirmed its new release window for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5.

Undead Labs has already been running Alpha playtests for State of Decay 3 over the past few months. The studio now plans to bring more players into the testing process as development moves towards its next stage.

Players can sign up for the upcoming tests through the State of Decay playtest website.

State of Decay 3 Could Be Canceled Amid Undead Labs Sale
The zombie survival sequel was showcased at Xbox Games Showcase 2026 and recently entered public playtests, but new reports claim its future now hangs in the balance.

State of Decay 3 Is Heading Into Closed Beta

The move from Alpha testing to a wider closed beta should give Undead Labs a much larger player pool to test the game's systems before launch.

Creative Director Kevin Patzelt explained that the studio plans to gradually expand access to both its Alpha and closed beta tests.

“We’re going to be expanding our alpha and then closed beta to more players over time. This is our largest map ever, and with untethered multiplayer, we really need to take the opportunities to stress-test and fine-tune”, Patzelt said.

Patzelt also confirmed that players who don't get into the first round shouldn't give up.

“If you don’t get access right away, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year for players familiar and brand new to the series”, Patzelt added.

That testing will be particularly important for State of Decay 3, which is introducing the series’ largest map yet alongside what Undead Labs describes as "untethered multiplayer."

The studio wants more players testing those systems before release, which explains why the game is moving into a broader testing phase well ahead of its 2027 launch.

State of Decay 3 Will Still Be an Xbox Game Pass Game

There's an interesting twist to the game's Xbox connection. Undead Labs is currently in the process of leaving Microsoft's first-party studio lineup. Despite that, State of Decay 3 is still scheduled to launch on Xbox platforms.
