Tesla is preparing a redesigned app for its driver-assistance software, and the goal is to make it easier for owners to subscribe to and track how often they use it.
The update centres on Tesla Full Self-Driving, the company’s advanced driver-assistance feature that can handle steering, lane changes, and parking while the driver remains attentive. With the new app, Tesla plans to show owners clearer statistics about their usage, including charts that track how frequently the system is engaged.
The company also plans to introduce “streaks,” showing how many consecutive days a driver uses FSD. It adds a slightly gamified layer to a feature that has mostly lived quietly inside the vehicle interface.
Easier Subscription, More Usage Data
Today, drivers who want to subscribe to FSD often need to navigate through several menus on the car’s touchscreen or in the mobile app. The redesigned app reduces that process to a single tap for compatible vehicles.
Once activated, the app will display usage insights that go beyond the basic statistics currently available. Existing subscribers can mainly see how many miles were driven with FSD compared to manual driving. The new version adds bar charts and visual breakdowns showing how often the system is used over time.
Part of Tesla’s Bigger Software Push
Tesla has steadily expanded FSD since launching it in beta in 2020. The system still requires active driver supervision, meaning vehicles equipped with it are not fully autonomous.
Even so, the technology sits at the centre of Tesla’s broader ambitions. Tesla boss, Elon Musk, has repeatedly described the company as an artificial intelligence and robotics business, with self-driving software playing a major role in that shift.
The feature currently costs around $99 per month through a subscription model, which means increasing adoption carries clear financial incentives for the company.
Limited to Newer Hardware
The redesigned app will only work on Tesla vehicles equipped with the A14 chip, also known as FSD Hardware 4.0, which started appearing in vehicles in early 2023.
Tesla also continues to expand the availability of the software globally. FSD is currently offered in markets including Canada, China, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. In Europe, the Dutch regulator RDW recently approved its supervised use after testing.
The new app does not change how the system drives the car. What it changes is how owners interact with it, by turning usage into something they can easily see, track, and subscribe to.
