I began to realise that AI was not coming for my job as a creative in late 2024, just as the AI boom was picking up. At the time, a smarter ChatGPT that had been touted as the death of writers had been released.

The creative industry was unsure if truly AI would be the death of it, rendering everyone from Justin Bieber to Denis Villeneuve jobless. While there are many who would love for this to have been the case, after I asked ChatGPT to design the floor plan of a modest 2-bedroom home, I knew it was those in tech itself that had the most reason to worry about.

“It seems much worse for the math people than the word people,” Peter Thiel said in a clip that went viral this week. He could not have articulated it better.

This week it became obvious. The India backchannel IT industry that has powered the global tech world, looking for cheap labour, has been gutted, with thousands of IT professionals losing their jobs. In the States, Jack Dorsey announced a fleet of layoffs that affected over 4,000 people across his portfolio of companies, including Cash App and Square.

A judge in America has dismissed Elon Musk’s xAI lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the rival AI startup of stealing its trade secrets. “xAI does not allege any facts indicating that OpenAI induced xAI’s former employees to steal xAI’s trade secrets or that these former xAI employees used any stolen trade secrets once employed by OpenAI,” the judge said.
