Favour Oladeji knew something was wrong the moment he tried to log in.

He had just wrapped up a project and was expecting payment from a client when his account stopped working. There was no warning email, no request to verify his identity, and no explanation waiting in his inbox. The platform he relied on to get paid had simply locked him out.

"I found out when I tried to log in and use my account," Oladeji, a software developer, told Techloy. "I was surprised because everything had been working normally before then."

For freelancers and remote workers, few things are more unsettling than losing access to the account that pays their bills. It can happen without warning, and when it does, the silence often feels worse than the suspension itself.

Oladeji's experience is far from unique. To understand why payment platforms freeze accounts and why getting them back can take weeks, we spoke with two freelancers who went through it, a senior software engineer, and a former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) who has worked behind the scenes on payment systems.
