For nearly eight years, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fans shared one recurring complaint: progressing through the game's world often meant stopping to search menus, swap party members and equip the right Blades just to clear simple environmental obstacles.
Now, players who gained early access to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in Australia and New Zealand have discovered that Nintendo and developer Monolith Soft have reworked the game's much-criticised Field Skills system, without mentioning the change in any patch notes or pre-launch marketing.
The unexpected improvement has come as a welcome surprise to longtime fans, and it lands the same day the Switch 2 Edition itself goes live. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is available digitally starting today, July 30, with a physical release following on October 1.
Existing owners can unlock the upgrade, including 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, a new Rare Blade named Momo, and the new Merc Assault mode through a $9.99 upgrade pack rather than buying the game again. Torna, The Golden Country also gets many of the same improvements.
Ahead of launch, Nintendo described the Switch 2 Edition as delivering enhanced visuals, new content and gameplay refinements to make the adventure "feel better than ever" for returning players and newcomers, though it never mentioned the Field Skills change specifically.
