You’re watching a YouTube Short, some creator’s walking through a city, and suddenly, a jacket they’re wearing grabs your attention. You want it. But instead of screenshotting, zooming in, and launching a full-scale Google search, YouTube’s about to offer something far more seamless. With Google Lens now integrating into Shorts, you’ll soon be able to tap and identify what you see, straight from the video.

YouTube announced this new feature on Thursday, confirming that Lens is rolling out to Shorts in beta over the coming weeks. The move means viewers will be able to pause a Short, tap the “Lens” icon in the top menu, and highlight or draw over anything on screen, be it an outfit, a landmark, or even a random gadget. Lens will then return visual matches and relevant search results directly over the video.

It’s a smart move in YouTube’s ongoing race to stay ahead of TikTok and Instagram Reels. Neither of those platforms currently offers built-in visual search, making the addition an edge that leans heavily into Google’s strength: search. While TikTok has dipped into image recognition for shopping, it hasn’t reached the seamless real-time interaction that Google Lens could offer.

Notably, YouTube says this new Lens-in-Shorts feature won’t display ads during the beta phase and will exclude Shorts that contain affiliate links or paid product promos. So at least for now, it’s about user experience, not monetisation.

The Lens integration isn’t just about shopping. It could also let you identify travel spots, plants, tech gear, or even artwork, all while staying inside the YouTube app. Once you've finished exploring, a single tap returns you directly to the video feed.

Google has gradually been weaving Lens into its core products, from Search and Photos to Gemini. Bringing it to YouTube Shorts is a natural progression, especially as Shorts continues evolving into a full-fledged rival to TikTok. Back in April, YouTube also introduced AI stickers, synced editing tools, and smarter templates to boost short-form creation.

With Lens in Shorts, YouTube isn’t just levelling up its app; it’s turning curiosity into instant action.
