Recently, YouTube has been making changes to its platform that affect creators. First, the Google-owned platform increased the qualifications for its monetisation programme, the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP), earlier this month.

On Monday, the company announced another change, this time to how views are counted on YouTube videos. Starting August 24, video views will be counted as soon as a video begins playing, with no minimum watch time requirement. This method isn’t entirely new to the platform, as it has already been used for Shorts over the past year.

“Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live),” YouTube said in a post on X.

In the past, YouTube has used different methods to count views across its formats. The exact threshold used for standard videos before this change isn’t entirely clear, although some reports have suggested that a viewer needed to watch for a certain amount of time before a view was counted.

YouTube Plans to Let Creators Use AI Versions of Themselves in Shorts
The move expands YouTube’s AI tools while adding new controls to help creators manage how their likeness is used and limit low-quality AI content.

What this change will mean for creators

The change could mean more views for creators, as views will now be counted as soon as someone starts playing a video. That could be a positive for creators, but it could also make public view counts less useful when creators and advertisers are trying to measure genuine audience interest.

YouTube will also join TikTok and Instagram, which already use this method to count views.

YouTube will keep the previous view metric in Analytics under a new name, “Engaged views,” so creators can still see how many viewers actually stuck around.

The company also clarified that the change “won’t impact creator earnings or YPP eligibility.”
