For years, PlayStation fans who wanted to revisit Call of Duty: Black Ops or Black Ops II had one option: dig out an old PS3.

While both games remained playable on newer Xbox consoles through Microsoft's backwards compatibility program, PlayStation players were effectively locked out.

Without native PS3 backwards compatibility on PS4 or PS5, two of the most celebrated entries in Call of Duty history have spent more than a decade trapped on aging hardware.

Well, that's finally about to change.
