Claude Fable 5 is coming back to service. Anthropic has said that the model is being redeployed globally starting today, July 1, after the US government lifted the export ban that took it offline on June 12. The ban lasted 18 days and took Mythos 5, its more restricted model version, down with it too.
It's not showing up for everyone at once. Anthropic is rolling it out gradually, the same way it did when Fable 5 first launched, so there's no need to worry if it is still marked unavailable in your model picker yet.
The ban happened because Amazon researchers found a way to get Fable 5 to expose security flaws in software. The government responded by cutting off every user worldwide, not just the people the rule was meant for.
What's coming back today isn't the same model, though. Anthropic rebuilt the safety filter that let that happen and made new commitments to the government along the way. Here's 7 things that are different now.
