Claude Fable 5 is now available. Anthropic redeployed the AI model globally on July 1, after the US government lifted the export ban that took it offline on June 12. The ban lasted 18 days and took Mythos 5, its more restricted model version, down with it too.

Pro, Max, Team, and premium Enterprise plans get Fable 5 free up to 50% of their weekly usage limit, and can access it through the model picker till July 19, after which access will require a separate bill for usage credits. Fable 5 costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly double Opus 4.8.

The ban initially happened because Amazon researchers found a way to get Fable 5 to expose security flaws in software. The government responded by cutting off every user worldwide, not just the people the rule was meant for.

What returned isn't the same model, though. Anthropic rebuilt the safety filter that let that happen and made new commitments to the government along the way. Here's 7 things that are different now.
