Ethiopia's smartphone shipments grew 9.8% in Q1 2021, buoyed by Chinese brands

Smartphone shipments in Ethiopia increased 9.8% in Q1 2021, with China-owned phone brand, TECNO retaining its top position, a growth of 27% year-on-year, and a market share of 31%, according to the latest data from Counterpoint Research.

The data also shows that Transsion Group, the Chinese technology company that manufactures mobile phone brands - TECNO, Infinix, and itel -  accounted for more than 61% of the Ethiopian smartphone market shipments in Q1 2021, compared to 54% in Q1 2020.

While Samsung retained its second position, with a growth of 31% year-on-year, and a 28% market share, itel was in third position, with shipments growing 53% year-on-year, and a 19% market share, and Infinix had a 10% market share.
