Gears of War: E-Day Early Access: Time, $30 Upgrade

If you already know that Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6, there’s one date you should actually be paying attention to this week: October 1.

That’s when Early Access begins for players with the right edition, giving them up to five days with The Coalition’s new Gears prequel before the wider launch.

For players in Nigeria, E-Day Early Access starts at 4pm WAT on Thursday, October 1. And if you already have Game Pass Ultimate, there’s an important detail: you don't need to buy the $99.99 Premium Edition to get in early.

Microsoft is offering a $30 Premium Edition Upgrade that adds Early Access and the Premium Edition's extras to the game.

When does Gears of War: E-Day Early Access start?

Gears of War: E-Day Early Access begins on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 3pm UTC. Microsoft is using a worldwide launch time rather than unlocking the game at midnight in each region.

Some key release times are:

Nigeria/West Africa: 4pm WAT
UK and Ireland: 4pm BST
Central Europe: 5pm CEST
US East Coast: 11am EDT
US Central: 10am CDT
US West Coast: 8am PDT
Japan: midnight JST on October 2
Eastern Australia: 1am AEDT on October 2

The standard launch follows the same schedule on October 6 at 3pm UTC, or 4pm WAT in Nigeria.

How can you play Gears of War: E-Day early?

You need an edition that includes Early Access.

The $99.99 Premium Edition includes up to five days of Early Access, along with the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five Seasonal Customization Packs, and 1,000 Iron.

There's also a $30 Premium Edition Upgrade for players who already have the game or have Game Pass Ultimate. It provides the same Early Access benefit and Premium Edition extras without requiring you to purchase the full $99.99 edition.

That makes the upgrade the option to look at if you already have access to E-Day through Game Pass Ultimate and want to start playing five days before everyone else.

Does Xbox Game Pass include Gears of War: E-Day Early Access?

Not on its own. Gears of War: E-Day joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on October 6, when the standard version launches.

Game Pass subscribers who want to play on October 1 can purchase the Premium Edition Upgrade instead. Xbox says the upgrade requires the base game or a Game Pass Ultimate membership.

So if you're happy to wait, your Game Pass subscription gets you into the game on October 6. If you want the five-day head start, the $30 upgrade is the additional purchase.

Can you pre-install Gears of War: E-Day?

Yes. Pre-installation began on September 29 at 3pm UTC for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam.

That means the game can already be downloaded ahead of the October 1 Early Access launch. Xbox specifically recommends pre-installing ahead of time so players are ready when the game unlocks.

If you're planning to play at 4pm WAT on Thursday, there's little reason to wait until launch time to start the download.
