However, regardless of how many points you score, all applicants must meet a basic set of requirements.

To apply, you’ll need to provide:

- Proof of financial means, usually around €1,091 ($1,284) per month, shown through a blocked account, a declaration of commitment, or an eligible job offer

How Much Does the Germany Opportunity Card Cost?
The German Opportunity Card carries a non-refundable visa fee of €75 ($88). In addition, applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to support themselves while living in the country. This usually requires showing access to around €1,091 ($1,284) per month, which adds up to roughly €13,000 ($15,300) for a full year, ensuring that your living costs are covered while you search for employment.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for the Opportunity Card
- Apply online
First, you want to create an account on Germany’s Consular Services Portal, fill out the application form carefully, and upload all the required documents, including your passport, proof of qualifications, and financial statements. - Book an in-person appointment
Next, you want to book an in-person appointment at the nearest German embassy or consulate. - Attend your appointment and pay the fee
During your appointment, you will submit your documents, provide biometric data if required, and pay a non-refundable €75 visa fee. - Receive your visa and travel
Once your application is approved, you’ll receive the Opportunity Card, which allows you to enter Germany, search for work, and take on part-time employment of up to 20 hours per week.
Bringing Your Family With You
It is possible to bring immediate family members, including a spouse and children under 18, while you are in Germany on an Opportunity Card.
To do so, you must prove that you have enough financial resources to support your family and that you have suitable accommodation. In most cases, spouses are also required to demonstrate basic German language skills at the A1 level.
Permanent Residence and Citizenship
The Opportunity Card itself does not lead directly to permanent residence or citizenship. To stay long-term, you must secure qualified employment and switch to a skilled worker residence permit.
Once you transition to a skilled worker status and meet the required residence and employment conditions, you can later apply for permanent residence and, eventually, German citizenship.
