Godzilla Minus Zero Makes Franchise History With First-Ever R Rating After 72 Years

Godzilla has spent 72 years destroying cities, battling monsters, and terrifying audiences, but the franchise is about to cross a line it has never officially crossed in the US.

Godzilla Minus Zero has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for “some violent content/bloody images”, making it the first Godzilla film to receive that classification in the United States.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the Japanese sequel will premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26 before opening in Japan on November 3 and North America on November 6. The film will first arrive in cinemas, with UK and other international releases also scheduled for November.

Why is Godzilla Minus Zero Rated R?

The MPA's official classification cites some violent content and bloody images. That is a surprisingly simple explanation for a franchise that has spent decades destroying buildings and crushing humans under enormous feet.

The important difference is that an R rating does not simply mean the film is “more violent” than every Godzilla movie that came before it. It means the US ratings body has determined that the particular combination of material crosses its threshold for an R classification.

The previous film, Godzilla Minus One, was rated PG-13 in the US for creature violence and action. The jump therefore gives audiences a useful indication that Yamazaki's follow-up is taking its depiction of violence and destruction further.

What Makes This Godzilla Film Different?

The story moves forward to 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, as Japan tries to recover from the devastation of the Second World War. The Shikishima family is once again at the centre, with Ryûnosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe returning.

The official synopsis describes a country that has finally managed to find a fragile peace before a new threat destroys that sense of recovery. The wording is important because the human consequences remain central to the story.

Yamazaki is again writing, directing, and overseeing the visual effects, continuing the approach that made Minus One feel closer to a post-war drama with a monster in it than a conventional creature feature.
