Apple has spent years making the iPhone and Mac feel like they belong together. Now Google wants to do something similar for Android users.

Just days after introducing its new Googlebook laptops, Google has revealed the software behind them: GooglebookOS, a new laptop operating system that brings together Android, ChromeOS and Gemini.

The idea is that your Android phone and laptop shouldn't feel like two separate devices but rather parts of the same system. Google says GooglebookOS is designed specifically for premium laptops, while existing Chromebooks will continue to serve markets such as education and enterprise.

GooglebookOS is more than Android on a laptop

GooglebookOS combines Android's app ecosystem with the desktop foundations of ChromeOS. That means users can run Android apps from the Play Store while still getting a desktop experience designed for a larger screen.

Google is also building in support for Linux and a desktop version of Chrome, giving the operating system a broader range of tools than simply running phone apps on a laptop.

But the more interesting part is how GooglebookOS connects to your Android phone.

Continue On lets you start something on your phone and pick it up on your Googlebook. Files gives you access to files and photos stored on your phone, while Cast My Apps lets you use Android apps in desktop windows.

The bigger idea behind GooglebookOS is that Google wants switching between your phone and laptop to feel seamless.

Five laptops are launching with GooglebookOS

Google is launching five Googlebook laptops built by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

Unlike most Chromebooks, these devices use premium materials, including aluminium, magnesium alloy, and carbon fibre. Every Googlebook includes a haptic glass trackpad, backlit keyboard, Dolby Atmos speakers, and a touchscreen display with resolutions of up to 2.8K OLED.

Prices range from $899 to $1,299. The Acer Googlebook 14 is the entry-level model at $899, while the Asus, HP, and Lenovo models start at $1,299. The Dell XPS Googlebook sits in the middle at $1,199.
