The series that keeps on giving.
Word on the street is Apple might be skipping iOS 19 and calling the next update of its operating system, iOS 26. And no, it’s not because it might be packing eight versions’ worth of features.
Apparently, Apple wants all of its operating systems—iOS, macOS, watchOS, iPadOS, and even visionOS—to roll with the same number, following a historical numerical sequence.
It’s not confirmed yet, but it tracks. Tech companies love a dramatic rename when they need a refresh. For example, Microsoft ditched Windows 9 and jumped straight to Windows 10. Qualcomm renamed its Snapdragon chips to avoid confusion.
But for Apple, this feels bigger. It’s less “we’re skipping a number” and more “we want to rewrite the story.” With rumors of a visual overhaul, AI upgrades, and deeper cross-device syncing, the name change might just be a setup for a bigger shift.
And you’ve got to wonder… if iOS is getting a time jump, how long before the iPhone does too?
