Reacher Had the Spotlight But Neagley Is Finally Getting the Story

Jack Reacher has spent four seasons walking into dangerous towns, finding trouble and leaving a trail of broken criminals behind him. Frances Neagley, on the other hand, has usually been somewhere nearby, proving that she can keep up. Now, she gets to be the one people follow.

Prime Video’s Neagley takes one of the most recognisable supporting characters from Reacher and puts her at the centre of an eight-episode story. Maria Sten returns as Neagley, this time as a Chicago-based private investigator whose investigation begins with the suspicious death of a childhood friend.

It would have been easy to make the series Reacher with a different lead. Instead, Neagley uses the spin-off to explore a side of its protagonist that the original series only had time to hint at. There is still violence, investigation and the occasional appearance from Jack Reacher, but the new series is more interested in the person underneath Neagley’s intimidating competence.

What Happens When the Quiet Character Becomes the Main Character?

Neagley was always an unusual supporting character. She was not introduced as someone who needed rescuing, comic relief or a romantic storyline. She was one of Reacher’s former military colleagues, someone who could read a situation quickly, fight when necessary and understand Reacher without needing much explanation.

That made her interesting precisely because she did not seem to need the spotlight but Neagley changes that arrangement. The series gives her a professional life in Chicago and a case that belongs entirely to her.

When her childhood friend Tommy Crane dies under suspicious circumstances, Neagley refuses to accept that the death was simply a suicide. Her investigation eventually leads her towards a strange community, a dangerous cult and a pharmaceutical conspiracy.

The mystery gives the series its engine, but Neagley herself is the reason to keep watching. She is not trying to become Reacher. She is trying to understand what happened to someone she cared about.
