After nearly three decades, South Park has changed its name. Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s long-running animated comedy returned for Season 29 on September 16, now using the name South America as part of a new satirical direction.
The season premiered at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central in the US, with new episodes arriving on Paramount+ the following day in the US, Canada and Australia.
The rebrand was announced on September 9, shortly after the series won its sixth Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Programme. Parker and Stone said the change was “inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google”, while also making a pointed reference to their parent company Paramount.

Why Has South Park Been Renamed South America?
The name change is part of the creators’ satire surrounding recent efforts to rename geographical places. South Park Studios announced that the fictional Colorado town would now be called South America, with the new branding appearing across the programme’s official material.
The announcement came after the show’s Emmy win, giving the rebrand additional attention just before the new season began. South Park Studios also described the series as an Emmy-winning show that has continued to attract audiences almost three decades after its 1997 debut.
This does not mean the programme has moved to the South American continent. Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny remain at the centre of the story, and the series continues to use its familiar small-town setting.
What Happens in The Season 29 Premiere?
The first episode is titled “South American Biker Gangs” and focuses on e-bikes arriving in town. Stan, Kyle, and Kenny become interested in the new bikes, while the adults respond by forming a cycling group of their own.
