After more than 18 years at the helm of one of the most storied companies, this week Apple announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO of the company. The move marks a point of departure for an era of plenty for the American tech giant that produced the iPhone, the MacBook, and the iPod.

Squashing any potential speculation on who would replace Cook, the company tapped John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, as CEO.

But the Apple that Cook inherited from founder Steve Jobs is dramatically different from the Apple of 2026. Still a global leader, for Ternus to make his mark, he would need to ship hit, game-changing products that excite audiences in an era where the field has become tightly competitive. Multiple tech companies in India and China have rolled out competitive and cheaper products with all the premium features Apple has.

However, the MacBook Neo, Apple’s cheapest computer, presents a unique opportunity for Ternus to compete in the mid-range device category. AI innovation is another area that tech observers have cited will be his focus, notable as, under Cook, the company had struggled with infusing it into its products, constantly shifting deadlines.

This week, we have all the details on who John Ternus is and what his equally long career at Apple tells us about how he will build.
