Nintendo has officially revealed a brand-new Star Fox during a surprise Direct presentation, marking the first new entry in the beloved sci-fi franchise in over a decade.
The upcoming title, simply called Star Fox, launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, bringing back Fox McCloud and the iconic Arwing crew with modern visuals, upgraded gameplay, and online multiplayer.
According to Nintendo, the new game is “based” on Star Fox 64, but rebuilt with redesigned characters, updated visuals, and modern gameplay systems.
While the original level structure appears to remain intact, the presentation showcased dramatically improved environments, cinematic action sequences, and highly detailed character models. One standout moment from the reveal was the surprisingly realistic redesign of Slippy Toad, which immediately sparked discussion online.
Classic in-flight banter between squad members also returns, preserving one of the franchise’s most recognizable features.
Beyond the classic Arwing gameplay, Nintendo confirmed players will also be able to pilot additional vehicles, including a submarine for underwater missions.
The reboot introduces several modern features to the series, including a new four-versus-four online dogfighting multiplayer mode. Players can compete online while using interactive avatars powered by Nintendo’s GameChat system.
Nintendo described the feature as, “An interactive avatar that mirrors your expressions and movements in GameChat.”
The game will also support mouse controls, giving players another option for precision aiming and movement on Switch 2 hardware.
For longtime fans looking for a nostalgic experience, Nintendo confirmed compatibility with the classic Nintendo 64 controller.
Pricing and Release Details
Nintendo says Star Fox will cost $49.99 for the digital edition and $59.99 for the physical edition.
The game launches on June 25 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement arrives at an important time for Nintendo, as many fans had criticized the company’s 2026 Switch 2 lineup for lacking major first-party exclusives.
The return of Star Fox now gives Nintendo another major franchise release alongside its growing Switch 2 catalog.
It also marks the franchise’s first completely new installment in years, reigniting interest in one of Nintendo’s most iconic sci-fi series.
Nintendo has also released the full 15-minute gameplay presentation for fans wanting a deeper look at the reboot, including gameplay footage, multiplayer details, and the game’s updated visuals.
