No Man’s Sky Cosmos Update Lets Players Own a Space Station

No Man’s Sky has spent the past decade getting bigger and more ambitious, and Hello Games is celebrating its 10th anniversary by finally giving one of the game's most important areas a major refresh.

The No Man’s Sky: Cosmos update is now available on PS5, and it's free for existing players.

This time, the focus isn't another new planet or creature. Cosmos completely reworks the space between those planets, giving players far more to discover and do while they're travelling through the universe.

No Man’s Sky Cosmos Adds Asteroid Belts and New Space Activities

One of the first things players will notice is that solar systems now have a lot more going on.

Cosmos adds asteroid belts, space hulks, outposts, anomalies and new missions, while a new solar system map helps players find and keep track of the different points of interest.

Asteroid belts also contain valuable crystal resources, and some of the larger asteroids are big enough to land on and use as building locations.

That makes travelling through a system feel less like a quick stop on the way to your next planet and more like an opportunity to explore.

Space Hulks Bring Risky Salvage Missions

The new space hulks are enormous wrecks that players can explore for valuable materials.

You'll be able to use a physics-based gravity gun to pull pieces of metal from the wreckage before moving them to your ship with a new tractor beam. You can't simply strip a hulk indefinitely, though.

Take too much, and the structure can begin to melt down and explode, forcing you to decide whether another haul is worth the risk. Scanning the wreck before you start salvaging should help you identify the most valuable targets.

You Can Build Bases Anywhere in Space

Cosmos also expands No Man’s Sky's building system beyond planets and asteroids. Players can now construct free-floating modular bases in space, opening up some interesting possibilities for creative builders.
