Patrick Stewart is in Avengers: Doomsday. But the actor’s death at the age of 86, announced on 29 October 2026, has given his appearance a more emotional significance. Stewart will reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier in the Marvel film, which arrives in cinemas on 18 December 2026.

The release is planned for theatres, with tickets available through cinema websites and booking platforms; prices will vary by country, venue and screening format. Marvel Studios has also confirmed that this will be Stewart’s final on-screen performance.

For fans who have followed his portrayal of the X-Men leader for more than 25 years, the film will now serve as a farewell to one of the franchise’s most familiar faces.

Katniss is back in Sunrise on the Reaping, and early-access screenings let fans see her two days before the November 20 release.

Patrick Stewart’s Final Appearance As Professor X

Stewart’s return was confirmed when Marvel announced the Avengers: Doomsday cast in March 2025. He will appear alongside Ian McKellen, who returns as Magneto, as well as other actors from the original X-Men films.

The actor first played Professor X in 2000’s X-Men, introducing audiences to the powerful telepath who founded and led the mutant team. He reprised the role across several films, including X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan. His most recent appearance before Doomsday was in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Following news of his death, Marvel Studios confirmed in its tribute that the upcoming film marks his final appearance. The studio said Stewart brought Professor X to life with “extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity”, adding that he had defined the character for generations of fans.

What His Death Means For Avengers: Doomsday

Stewart’s death does not mean Professor X will be written out of the film or that the character dies in its story. His appearance was filmed before the actor’s passing, and Marvel has not revealed whether the character survives the events of Doomsday.

However, the film will now carry a significance beyond its role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stewart’s performance will be the last opportunity for audiences to see him portray the character on the big screen.

The January 2026 teaser already offered a glimpse of his return. It showed Professor X reuniting with Magneto over a chess game, while Magneto reflected on mortality, saying: “Death comes for us all. That's all I know for sure.” The line takes on a different meaning following Stewart’s death, although there is no confirmation that it was intended as a reference to the actor’s passing.

People reported that Stewart discussed his return in an interview published three months before his death. He said he could not imagine officially retiring, adding: “I’ll always and forever be an actor.”

Who Else Is Returning In Avengers: Doomsday?

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday brings together characters from different corners of Marvel’s film universe. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the franchise, this time as its villain, Doctor Doom, while Chris Evans reprises his role as Steve Rogers.
