Sony could be preparing a pretty significant upgrade for PS5 Pro owners with its next major system update.
According to details emerging from the current PS5 beta, firmware 14.0 could introduce an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, better known as PSSR.
PSSR is one of the PS5 Pro's key graphics features, allowing games to reconstruct higher-resolution images from lower-resolution renders. Sony has already improved the technology since the console launched, but the reported PSSR 2.0 could take another step toward cleaner and more stable visuals.
PSSR 2.0 Could Improve PS5 Pro Image Quality
The biggest reason I'm interested in PSSR 2.0 is that Sony appears to be focusing on some of the technology's existing visual shortcomings.
Upscaling can sometimes produce shimmering, flickering, or other artifacts around fine details and moving objects. The reported improvements could reduce those issues and make reconstructed images look more stable.
That could be particularly useful for PS5 Pro games that already use PSSR to balance image quality and performance. Rather than forcing developers to render everything at a higher native resolution, better reconstruction can potentially give games a sharper image while leaving more of the console's hardware available for other graphical features.
What's particularly interesting is that this appears to be a system-level improvement. If PSSR 2.0 is integrated into the console's firmware as reported, some of its benefits could potentially reach supported games without developers having to completely overhaul their individual implementations.
There is still plenty we don't know, however. The actual improvement will depend on Sony's final implementation and how individual games use PSSR.
PSSR 2.0 Could Be Enabled Automatically
Another reported change is that PSSR 2.0 could be enabled by default on PS5 Pro once firmware 14.0 is installed.
