Spotify has rolled out a new feature that allows users in the United States and the United Kingdom to buy physical books directly through its platform, extending its push beyond music and audiobooks.

The feature, first teased in February, lets users purchase printed books while browsing audiobook pages inside the Spotify app, turning discovery into a direct path to ownership.

How Spotify’s new book-buying feature works

The system is powered through a partnership with Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores.

When users open an audiobook page, they now see a button labeled “Get a copy for your bookshelf.” Clicking it redirects them to Bookshop.org, where the purchase is completed. Pricing, inventory, and shipping are handled entirely by Bookshop, not Spotify.

At launch, the feature is rolling out on Android, with iOS support expected soon.

Why Spotify is expanding into books

The move reflects a broader shift in Spotify’s strategy. The company is positioning itself as more than an audio streaming service, moving deeper into content discovery and commerce.

Audiobooks have already become a key part of that push. Adding physical book purchases connects listening with ownership, keeping users within the same flow instead of sending them to other platforms.

As Spotify looks to grow engagement and revenue beyond music, books offer a natural extension. The company recently reported 751 million monthly active users, and has also raised subscription prices in key markets across the US and Europe.

New audiobook features also roll out

Alongside physical book purchases, Spotify introduced updates to its audiobook experience. One of the key features is Page Match, which lets users scan a page from a book and jump directly to that section in the audiobook.

Spotify says users who use Page Match listen to 55% more audiobook hours per week compared to others. It also found that 62% of matched titles were previously unlistened-to books, suggesting the feature is driving discovery, not just engagement.

The feature now supports more than 30 languages, including French, German, and Swedish. Spotify has also added Audiobook Recaps on Android, helping users pick up where they left off, and expanded Audiobook Charts to more markets, including Germany.

What this means going forward

The addition of physical book sales could change how users interact with books on Spotify. Instead of switching between apps, users can now discover, listen, and buy within a single experience.

If the model gains traction, Spotify could move beyond streaming into a more direct role in the book retail and publishing ecosystem.
