Xbox Cloud Gaming is testing a new way to pay for streaming games without committing to an Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Called Cloud Playtime, the option lets eligible Xbox Insiders buy streaming time in hourly packages, starting at $3.99 for 10 hours. Microsoft announced the preview on October 21, 2026, with 25-hour and 50-hour packages also available.

A wider rollout is planned for November, though availability will depend on your market, device and account eligibility.

If you’re wondering whether you can stream Xbox games without Game Pass, here’s how Cloud Playtime works, what it costs and how to access it.

How to Play Xbox Cloud Gaming Without Game Pass

Microsoft is currently testing Cloud Playtime with eligible Xbox Insiders who do not have an active Game Pass subscription. If you want to try it before the wider rollout, there are a few things to check first.

/1. Join the Xbox Insider Program

If you're not already an Insider, start with the official Xbox Insider Program guide. You can join by downloading the Xbox Insider Hub for a supported Xbox console or Windows PC.

Joining the program does not automatically give you access to every preview, so you may still need to wait for Cloud Playtime to appear for your account.

/2. Check whether Cloud Playtime is available

Open the Xbox Insider Hub and check the previews available to you. The new purchasing option is currently limited to eligible participants, and Microsoft has not guaranteed access for every Insider.

If the feature is unavailable on your account, the broader rollout planned for November is the next milestone to watch.

/3. Purchase a cloud playtime package

If you have access to the preview, follow the purchasing instructions available through the supported Xbox experience to choose a package. Microsoft has announced three introductory options, ranging from 10 to 50 hours.

Check the price and terms presented to your account before completing the purchase, as availability and purchasing options can vary by market and device.

/4. Stream a supported game

Once you've purchased playtime, you can use your hours to stream eligible games on supported devices. You'll generally need to own a cloud-playable game, although Microsoft allows free-to-play access for selected titles.

Buying streaming hours does not unlock the entire Xbox game library. Check that the game you want to play supports cloud gaming before spending money.

How Much Does Xbox Cloud Gaming Cost Without Game Pass?

Xbox Cloud Playtime has three introductory packages. The 10-hour option costs $3.99, the 25-hour package costs $7.99, and the 50-hour package costs $11.99.

The difference becomes clearer when you calculate the hourly cost. The smallest package works out to roughly 40 cents per hour, compared with 32 cents for 25 hours and 24 cents for 50 hours.

The 50-hour package offers the best hourly rate, but it also requires the largest upfront payment. If you only plan to stream occasionally, spending less on the 10-hour option may make more sense than buying hours you won't use soon.

Microsoft says purchased playtime remains available until it has been used, rather than expiring at the end of a monthly billing cycle. These are introductory prices, however, and the company has not guaranteed that they will remain unchanged after the preview.

What Do You Need to Play Xbox Games Through the Cloud?

You need a supported device and access to a game that can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cloud Playtime does not make every Xbox game available, even if you already own it.

Microsoft's announcement specifies that players need to purchase a cloud-playable game, except for selected titles that support free-to-play access. Game eligibility, streaming features and availability may vary by market and device.

Before buying hours, check whether your preferred game supports cloud streaming and whether the service is available to your account. This is particularly important if you're planning to use a device other than an Xbox console or Windows PC.

Can You Play Xbox Cloud Gaming for Free?

Yes. Microsoft is also testing a free, ad-supported cloud gaming option for Xbox Insiders who want to stream without paying for Game Pass or purchasing Cloud Playtime.

The main difference is the experience. Paid Cloud Playtime packages provide ad-free streaming, shorter waiting times and high-quality streaming, according to Microsoft. The free option includes advertisements and is subject to its own eligibility and availability requirements.

If you're only interested in trying cloud gaming, the free option may be worth exploring if it's available to you. If you prefer ad-free streaming, the prepaid packages provide another choice.
