YouTube is testing a two-person Premium plan
A cost-effective option for couples or roommates who want to enjoy YouTube Premium benefits without paying for unused slots in a family plan.
If you've ever hesitated to subscribe to YouTube Premium because the individual plan feels too steep and the family plan seems excessive for just two people, YouTube might have found a middle ground. The platform is currently piloting a new two-person Premium plan in select countries, including India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
In India, for example, it’s priced at ₹219 ($2.59) per month. That sits between the individual plan at ₹140 ($1.66) and the six-person family plan at ₹299 ($3.54). It’s basically YouTube’s version of Spotify Duo, recognising that shared subscriptions aren’t always about big households.
This move also builds on a trend we’ve seen from YouTube over the past few years. Before this, the company tested and eventually expanded its “Premium Lite” plan, a lower-cost tier that removes extras like ad-free music videos, offline viewing, and background play while still letting you watch most regular videos without ads.
In contrast, the two-person plan keeps all the full-feature perks but has more flexible pricing based on how people actually use the service, which could be great for couples. But we all know the new plan will also allow the company to increase subscribers and potentially earn more revenue.
After all, according to Statista, YouTube generated $36.1 billion in ad revenue in 2024, accounting for 13.66% of Google's overall revenue.
Unfortunately, a Google representative said there is no information to share concerning expansion into other regions. However, given the growing demand for flexible subscription options, YouTube may expand its offering to more regions in the future.
For now, users in the test countries can explore this new plan through the same process they use to subscribe to any other YouTube Premium plan.
