OpenAI Loses Its Second Executive This Week, Adding to the List of Departures in 2026

The departures follow another year of executive turnover at OpenAI, adding to a growing list of senior leaders who have left the company since 2025.

Lately, talent exiting firms have been happening enmasse, to say the least, and the latest company caught in this wave of departures is OpenAI.

According to a report, the ChatGPT maker is losing another senior executive, with Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser set to leave the company in the coming weeks. Her departure makes her the second senior leader to announce an exit from OpenAI this week.

In a team note posted on LinkedIn, Dresser, who joined OpenAI in December last year after serving as CEO of Slack, addressed her followers, saying she had “made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI in the coming weeks to pursue other opportunities.”

Earlier this week, Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s former chief operating officer and head of special projects, announced that he would be “moving on from OpenAI to start something new," he wrote in a post on X, adding that he believed there were “a few important new things the world will need to get right” in OpenAI’s next phase.

However, Dresser and Lightcap are not the only senior names to have left OpenAI this year.

OpenAI Has Lost Several Senior Leaders in 2026

Over the past several months, the company has seen departures across some of its most important teams, from operations and applications to product, safety, marketing, science, and ethics.

One of the more recent departures is Fidji Simo, who stepped down as OpenAI’s CEO of applications in July and moved into a part-time advisory role, according to Business Insider.

Simo had taken medical leave in April and later opened up about her experience living with postural tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. In announcing her move to an advisory role, she described the difficulty of managing a chronic illness while navigating the healthcare system.

Then there is Kevin Weil, who announced his departure in April after roughly two years at OpenAI. Weil joined the company in 2024 as chief product officer before moving to lead OpenAI for Science, an initiative focused on using AI to accelerate scientific discovery. According to Business Insider, he now heads an AI science startup that has sought a valuation of at least $750 million.

Also, there is Johannes Heidecke, who led OpenAI’s safety systems team, but left the company in July amid a reorganization of its safety operations.
