John Steinbeck’s East of Eden is getting another screen adaptation, but this time, Cathy Ames is at the centre of the story.
Netflix’s seven-episode series arrives on October 1, 2026, with Florence Pugh playing the character at the heart of Steinbeck’s 1952 novel.
Set in early 20th-century California, the series was filmed extensively in New Zealand, using its landscapes to recreate Steinbeck’s setting. Created by Zoe Kazan, East of Eden also stars Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist as brothers Adam and Charles Trask.

What Is East of Eden About?
At the heart of East of Eden is the Trask family and the difficult relationship between brothers Adam and Charles. Their story eventually extends to the next generation, where Adam’s sons, Cal and Aron, become caught in another family conflict.
The novel draws heavily from the biblical story of Cain and Abel, exploring jealousy, family expectations, and the choices people make. But Kazan’s adaptation puts more attention on Cathy, a character Steinbeck presents as deeply destructive.
Netflix describes the series as a story about a fiercely independent woman who drives a rift between two brothers and sets off a family saga that spans generations. That is why this version is different from the familiar 1955 film starring James Dean.
Why Florence Pugh’s Cathy is Different
Cathy has often been viewed as the villain of East of Eden, but Kazan wanted to look more closely at how she became that person.
Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Kazan said, “The thing that was really important to me was to stay rooted in the text of the book when it came to exploring who Cathy is.”
She also wanted the series to find Cathy’s humanity without making excuses for her actions.
