It has been more than eight years since Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls 6, and fans have spent much of that time waiting for something more substantial than the brief teaser released in 2018. Now, we might finally be getting a proper name for the long-awaited RPG, alongside some interesting clues about its story and setting.

According to a new report from The Verge, Bethesda's next major Elder Scrolls game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, with an official announcement potentially arriving as soon as November 2026.

The report, which cites sources familiar with Bethesda's plans, also offers a glimpse of what players could be getting into when the sequel eventually arrives. If the details are accurate, Sentinel will take players to Hammerfell and explore the history of the mysterious ancient artifacts that give the franchise its name.

There is plenty to unpack here, particularly for anyone who has been following the game's development since its original reveal. So, here's everything we know about The Elder Scrolls 6 so far, what's changed behind the scenes, and what to realistically expect from its rumoured November announcement.

The Elder Scrolls 6 could officially be called Sentinel

The Sentinel name has been circulating among Elder Scrolls fans for months, but The Verge's report gives the rumour considerably more weight.

Interestingly, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma may have accidentally given fans their biggest clue back in August. After watching a live playthrough of the upcoming RPG, Sharma posted on X that the scale and grandeur were incredible and that the story was even greater. However, she deliberately concealed the game's subtitle behind eight asterisks.

Fans quickly noticed that Sentinel has eight letters, adding to speculation that it was the name Bethesda was keeping under wraps. The Verge's latest report now suggests that the theory could be correct.

That said, Bethesda has yet to officially confirm the subtitle, so Sentinel should still be treated as a reported title rather than an announced one.

Hammerfell could be the setting, with a story about the Elder Scrolls themselves

The potential title isn't the only interesting detail in the report. The Verge also claims that Sentinel will take place in Hammerfell, a province in Tamriel that has previously appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online.

Hammerfell is home to the Redguards and has long been one of the locations fans have suspected Bethesda would explore in the next mainline game. The possibility fits with theories surrounding the original 2018 teaser, although Bethesda has never officially identified the location.

More importantly, the report suggests that the game will explore the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, helping players uncover the secrets of these mysterious ancient artifacts.

That's an interesting direction for a franchise that has spent years building its world around these objects without making them the central focus of an entire game. We don't yet know how that story will unfold or what role the artifacts will play in the main quest, but it could give Bethesda an opportunity to explore some of Tamriel's deeper history.

Bethesda has reportedly been showing gameplay behind closed doors

After years of silence, there are also signs that development has moved beyond the early stages fans have known about for so long.

According to the report, Bethesda has been showing gameplay from The Elder Scrolls 6 to selected people in recent months. Sharma's August visit was one example, with the Xbox boss getting to watch a live playthrough of the game.

Her reaction was encouraging, particularly her comment about the story, although it doesn't tell us much about the actual gameplay systems or how far development has progressed.

Bethesda has also previously indicated that the project has reached important internal milestones. The studio has described the sequel as a major priority, with much of its attention now directed towards getting the next chapter ready.

Still, seeing a playable build internally doesn't necessarily mean a public release is around the corner. Bethesda has a history of keeping its games under wraps until it is ready to show them properly.
