Mystery adventure fans on Nintendo platforms have a new title to keep an eye on. Imagineer has officially revealed Path of Mystery 2: The Mermaid Legend Murder Case for both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing another eerie investigative thriller to the growing lineup of narrative-focused games on Nintendo hardware.

From its release window and story details to its episodic structure and possible western localization, here’s everything we know about Path of Mystery 2: The Mermaid Legend Murder Case so far.

Path of Mystery 2 Release Date and Platforms

According to the official announcement, Path of Mystery 2: The Mermaid Legend Murder Case is scheduled to launch in Japan in September 2026.

The game is coming to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, although there’s a notable difference between versions. The Nintendo Switch edition will receive a standard physical release, while the Switch 2 version is planned as a game-key card release.

At the moment, no western release date has been confirmed.

Is Path of Mystery 2 Getting an English Release?

While Imagineer hasn’t officially announced a global launch yet, there’s good reason to believe the sequel could eventually make its way west.

The original game, Path of Mystery: A Brush with Death, launched in Japan in 2024 before later receiving an English localization earlier this year.

That release pattern makes a future localization for The Mermaid Legend Murder Case feel increasingly likely, especially as Nintendo Switch 2 continues attracting more visual novels and mystery adventure titles from Japanese publishers.

According to the game announcement, the sequel centers around a decades-old unsolved murder known as the “Narumisawa Landscape Painter Murder Case.”

“Thirty years before the events of the game, famous painter Mizuryu Uchida was found murdered near a pond at Yamabiki Manor in the fictional town of Narumisawa. Authorities investigated the strange killing, but the case was eventually closed after the death of the main suspect”, the announcement read.

“Now, years later, a group led by criminal psychology expert Ayame Minato travels to Yamabiki Manor to revisit the mystery as part of a research seminar. As the investigation unfolds, new suspects, hidden motives, and long-buried emotions begin surfacing”, it added.

The game appears heavily focused on psychological tension, interpersonal drama, and uncovering hidden truths across multiple timelines.

A New Episodic Mystery Structure

One of the more interesting details revealed so far is the game’s structure. Imagineer says the story unfolds through a prologue, 10 episodes, and a mysterious final “?” episode.

The narrative alternates between past and present timelines, gradually revealing details surrounding the original murder case. The developers are also positioning the title as the beginning of a larger “Mystery Walk” serial drama project being developed alongside Toybox Inc..

At the same time, the game will feature fully voiced dialogue, with Imagineer teasing that some “unexpected names” are part of the voice cast.

The currently confirmed characters include:

  • Doppo Akazawa — voiced by Yuuki Yonai
  • Alice Nanjou — voiced by Yui Ishikawa
  • Mizuki Akazawa — voiced by Mayuka Tani

For fans of anime-style mystery games, the emphasis on voice acting could become one of the sequel’s strongest selling points.

Why Mystery Fans Should Pay Attention

Nintendo Switch has quietly become a major home for visual novels and investigative adventures, and Path of Mystery 2 seems designed to lean deeper into that audience.

Its blend of cold-case storytelling, dual timelines, episodic pacing, psychological mystery, and fully voiced performances puts it in the same conversation as modern narrative-heavy mystery titles that have found success on Nintendo platforms in recent years.

The darker atmosphere and serialized storytelling angle could also help it stand out as Nintendo Switch 2’s mystery game lineup continues expanding throughout 2026.

For now, Path of Mystery 2: The Mermaid Legend Murder Case looks like one of the more intriguing Japanese mystery adventures announced for Nintendo Switch 2 so far, especially for players who enjoy slow-burn storytelling and layered investigations.
