Gemini AI can now summarise videos in your Google Drive
Gemini is turning your messy, time-consuming video backlog into something you can actually use.
If you've ever thought, "This meeting could have been an email," now it truly can be.
If you’re like me and dreading another hour-long meeting recording, Gemini’s got your back. In its latest update, Google has given its AI assistant the ability to summarise videos stored in Google Drive. Whether it’s a presentation, training session, or product demo, Gemini can now pull out key points, action items, or even answer specific questions—so you don’t have to watch the whole thing.
It’s part of Google’s ongoing push to make AI truly useful at work. The same summarisation features that Gemini already offers for PDFs and Google Docs are now expanding to video. That’s a big win for anyone who regularly sifts through long replays or needs to revisit info fast.
Here’s how it works: Open a video in Drive—either in the overlay preview or a new tab—and look for the “Ask Gemini” star icon in the top right. Click it to launch a chatbot where you can use preset prompts like “Summarise this video” or “List action items,” or just type in whatever you want to know.

What's the catch? The video needs captions enabled. Gemini relies on them to understand and summarise the content.
The feature is currently rolling out (in English) to Google Workspace customers on business and enterprise plans, those with Gemini Education or Education Premium add-ons, and Google One AI Premium subscribers. As with most Google rollouts, you can anticipate it to be introduced in phases over the next few weeks.
There’s more. Google is also adding engagement analytics to the Drive video player. You’ll now be able to see how many times a video has been opened, right in the Details panel. It’s a simple metric, but a handy one for tracking how your videos are being used.
This release follows Google’s splashy Gemini showcase at I/O 2025 and builds on earlier Workspace updates, including auto-generated next steps in Meet, AI voiceovers for videos, and better translations in Google Chat.

Meanwhile, the competition isn’t sitting still. Microsoft’s Copilot, built into Teams, already generates meeting recaps and pulls out to-dos from calls. Zoom has launched its AI Companion with similar features.
But Google’s move to integrate Gemini directly into Drive and apply it across documents, PDFs, and now video gives it a clear edge in managing information across your files.
