Another Star Wars project has been dropped, but this time the cancellation offers a glimpse into how Lucasfilm decides what belongs in the franchise. Writer Simon Farnaby has revealed that the Star Wars film he was developing with director Paul King is no longer being made as part of the franchise because the concept did not fit what Lucasfilm wanted from a Star Wars story.
The idea itself is not being discarded. Farnaby says Disney is now reworking it as a standalone science-fiction film, separate from the Star Wars universe.
The decision highlights one of the challenges Lucasfilm faces as it expands the franchise beyond its most familiar characters and stories.
The Star Wars Film That Wasn't Quite Star Wars
Farnaby and King had already worked together on Paddington 2 and Wonka, with King directing and Farnaby contributing to the scripts. After the success of Paddington 2, Disney and Lucasfilm approached the pair about developing a Star Wars film. Farnaby later described the offer as something that "distracted" them for a while as they worked on the idea.
Their concept centred on a robot rather than Luke Skywalker, Rey, Darth Vader or another familiar face from the franchise.
