Netflix is reviving Maelstrom, a long-delayed action film that has been in development since 1993, with Keanu Reeves now set to lead the project.
The actor replaces Alan Ritchson, best known for Reacher, who reportedly exited for undisclosed reasons. The casting change was reported on 26 October 2026, more than three decades after screenwriter Gregory Fitzpatrick sold the original script to Warner Bros.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Maelstrom follows a federal marshal tasked with protecting a woman who plans to testify against a powerful arms dealer as a hurricane cuts off their escape routes. Netflix has yet to announce a release date or filming location.

Why Has Maelstrom Taken So Long to Reach the Screen?
The story began during Hollywood’s rush to develop action films inspired by Die Hard, the 1988 thriller that helped establish the appeal of ordinary people trapped in extraordinary danger. Fitzpatrick’s screenplay was sold to Warner Bros. in 1993, but the project never reached production.
According to TheWrap’s report, the script was pitched as “Die Hard” during a hurricane. At the time, the idea was to create a contained action film built around one dangerous situation rather than a sprawling franchise.
Producer Jeff Robinov, who helped sell the original screenplay while working as an agent, is now involved in bringing it back. Netflix has looked for high-concept action stories that can attract a broad audience, and Maelstrom offers a straightforward premise that does not require viewers to know an existing fictional universe.
What Is Netflix’s Maelstrom About?
Reeves will play a federal marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who has entered witness protection and plans to testify against him. As a hurricane approaches, communications fail, and reinforcements cannot arrive. The marshal and his witness must survive both the storm and the criminals trying to reach them.
Collet-Serra, known for directing Netflix’s Carry-On and films such as The Shallows, is supposed to direct. His experience with confined settings, escalating danger and action-driven storytelling makes him a natural fit for a plot in which the weather is almost as threatening as the human enemies.
Why Replace Alan Ritchson With Keanu Reeves?
Ritchson had previously been attached to star, but his departure has not been explained publicly. Neither Netflix nor the actor has confirmed a reason, so claims that scheduling conflicts or another project caused the change remain speculation.
