Monster Hunter Wilds is finally coming to Nintendo Switch 2, and we now have our first proper look at how Capcom's massive hunting game is running on Nintendo's new console.
Capcom has shown off the Switch 2 version ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2026, giving players a closer look at the game in handheld mode. Thanks to GameSpot, we also have around 17 minutes of gameplay footage to check out.
I was particularly interested in seeing how Wilds would translate to Switch 2 after originally launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2025. This is a much more demanding Monster Hunter game than the series' earlier Nintendo releases, so getting it running on Switch 2 is a pretty significant move for Capcom.
Here's everything we know about Monster Hunter Wilds on Nintendo Switch 2 so far.

When is Monster Hunter Wilds coming to Nintendo Switch 2?
Monster Hunter Wilds will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2026.
Capcom confirmed the release date in September, with the Switch 2 version arriving after the game's original February 28, 2025 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
That means Switch 2 players will be getting the full Monster Hunter Wilds experience later this year, rather than a scaled-down spin-off or separate Nintendo version.
Pre-orders are also scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, according to the official Monster Hunter website.
Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 gameplay is now available
The first extended gameplay footage of Monster Hunter Wilds running on Switch 2 has now emerged.
The footage currently focuses on handheld mode, giving us an early look at how Capcom's open-world hunting game performs when played away from the TV. There's still more to see when it comes to docked gameplay, but this is a useful first look at what the Switch 2 version is actually doing.
And this is the part I'm most curious about going into launch. Wilds is built around large environments, dynamic weather, plenty of monsters and fairly demanding battles, so seeing all of that running on Nintendo's hardware is more interesting than simply seeing another trailer.
The Switch 2 version is also expected to support TV, tabletop and handheld play, while multiplayer remains part of the experience.
What is Monster Hunter Wilds about?
For anyone who skipped Wilds when it first launched, the game takes players into the Forbidden Lands, an unexplored region where the environment can change dramatically depending on the conditions.
You play as a Hunter investigating the region after a young boy named Nata is rescued near its border. His story leads the Guild to investigate a mysterious monster and the events surrounding his village.
From there, Wilds is still very much the Monster Hunter experience you'd expect: track monsters, hunt them, collect materials, and use those materials to create stronger weapons and armour.
The difference is how much more dynamic the world has become.
Monster Hunter Wilds has a changing open world
One of Wilds' biggest ideas is its living world.
The Forbidden Lands can shift between different environmental states, with weather and wildlife changing as conditions move between periods of Plenty, Fallow, and Inclemency. Monsters also react to those changes, which can affect how and where you hunt them.
That makes preparation more important than simply turning up at a location and waiting for a target.
Wilds also introduced mechanics such as Seikrets, which allow hunters to travel through the large environments more quickly and carry additional weapons, along with the ability to establish camps throughout the world.
