Sony has officially announced another round of price increases for Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service, with the company citing “ongoing market conditions” as the reason behind the adjustment.

The new pricing takes effect from the 20th of May for new subscribers across select regions, adding to what has already become an increasingly expensive generation for console gamers.

According to Sony, the base one-month PlayStation Plus subscription will now start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP, while the three-month option increases to $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP. That marks a $1 increase for the monthly plan and a $3 jump for the quarterly subscription.

Sony said in its statement, “Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions due to ongoing market conditions.”

The company also clarified that existing subscribers will not immediately be affected–except for users in Turkey and India–unless their current memberships lapse, expire, or are modified.

Another Price Increase in an Already Expensive Gaming Era

The PlayStation Plus adjustment arrives during a period where gaming hardware, software, and subscription services are all becoming more expensive globally.

Earlier this year, Sony raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in several regions, pointing to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Meanwhile, rising memory costs tied to the AI boom have reportedly affected long-term pricing discussions around future hardware like the PlayStation 6.

The timing of the PlayStation Plus increase has also raised eyebrows because it comes just months before the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026.

With GTA Online expected to remain locked behind a PlayStation Plus subscription on console, many fans believe Sony could see a major wave of new subscribers once Rockstar’s blockbuster launches.

Fans React Negatively Online

As expected, the announcement has sparked criticism across social media and gaming forums.

Some players questioned why online multiplayer still requires a paid subscription in 2026, while others pointed out the contrast between Sony’s move and Microsoft recently lowering the price of certain Xbox Game Pass tiers.

Others specifically took issue with Sony’s “ongoing market conditions” explanation, arguing that subscription prices continue to rise even as players already face higher costs for consoles and $70-$80 games.

Sony Still Expects Gaming Profits to Rise

Despite concerns around pricing, Sony still expects stronger profitability from its gaming division this financial year.

The company recently forecast gaming revenue to decline slightly due to lower hardware sales, but projected a 30% increase in profit, driven largely by stronger first-party software performance and the absence of major losses linked to Bungie.

Upcoming exclusives, including Marvel's Wolverine, are also expected to play a major role in Sony’s financial performance moving forward.

For many players, though, the bigger concern is simple: gaming continues to get more expensive at almost every level and subscriptions are no exception.
